I have been paying more attention to an apparent anomaly.
A12.154 states that the Location must contain "[a] minefield". Presumably,
the DEFENDER should receive this option when any minefield is in the
Location. That would include any Hidden or Known mines, placed by either
side.
As can be demonstrated, there is no obligation for the ATTACKER to notify
the DEFENDER that there are Hidden ATTACKER mines in any Mopped-Up Location.
And therein lies the anomaly, such as it is. An ATTACKER may suffer a
Casualty dr if the Mopped-Up Location contains a Known ATTACKER minefield;
but the ATTACKER *does not* suffer a Casualty dr if the Mopped-Up Location
contains a Hidden ATTACKER minefield.
So be it, but it strikes me as odd.
I would prefer a different treatment for minefields, and can propose two
ideas:
A) the ATTACKER must notify the DEFENDER that some (without revealing)
Mopped-Up Location contains a minefield, thus conferring the DEFENDER with
the option of Casualty dr;
B) minefields in a Mopped-Up Location do not qualify for a Casualty dr.
I prefer B). It makes more sense to me. The Mopping Up rules deal
specifically with Buildings, and there are specific mechanics for dealing
with minefields in a building. My reasoning would involve the mechanics for
revealing and being attacked by minefields, but I don't want to get into all
that!
Anyway, it's all JMO. I currently play it as I have previously described.
