I know it doesn't help you any, but I have installed every update of v4 into
the same directory every time an update was released, including this most
recent release, and it hasn't caused me any problems at all (although I did
have to replace my old VASL4 shortcut with this latest release, since there
is no longer a "VASSAL.EXE"). So I can assure you there is no "built-in
incompatibility".

That being said, installing new versions into new directories is generally a
sound practice <g>.

Rodney has also advised me that if you install VASSAL *as well as* VASL,
they can co-habit in the same directory quite happily, but whichever one was
installed second will overwrite the "User's Guide" files that were installed
first.
