You can uncombine the map and control windows under a preferences
option.

OK, thanks, I think I have it now.
I didn't realize that the map window was inherent part of the controls
window.
Very cool.
It took a long time to load up; will it be that long every time, or just
perhaps the 1st time it (correctly) loaded up?

If you're running Windows -- run "Java Web Start" from your Start menu.
Under "View" select "Downloaded Applications". Highlight "VASL" (if it
isn't already) and then under "Application" select "Create Shortcuts".

The "info" window appears as a separate window, interestingly.
