Well, the sixth edition of the ASL at Winter War event is now in the
books. Thanks to Don and Susan McKinney, our gracious hosts, for giving
us gaming space and for assisting us every step of the way!!

The 2004 event took on a different look and feel as, unexpectedly, we
saw a drop off in attendance from a high of 37 down to 22. This
necessitated a bracket system, drawn at random, rather than our
traditional method (which was, in essence, a bracket system, disguised
as an Open-style system).

Four "play-in" games were played on Friday night, with all other Friday
evening games played a warm-ups for the 16-man, four round knockout
event that began Saturday morning. As players lost, they entered "open"
gaming, using the scenario list as usual.

Here are the results, round by round:

PLAY-IN
Scott Drane def. Corey Edwards
Bob Miller def. Shawn Ettleman
Peter Ward def. Shawn Anglum
Matt Book def. Dave Goff

4th: Tim Riedl ($5)

Best Newbie: Shawn Anglum (CH! 4.2)

Special "Achievement" Award: Ed Wisnowski, who won a copy of a 3W folio
game on Desert Storm, for tying (with the greatest of humor) the
all-time ASL at Winter War losing streak, which now stands at 13 games.

SNAFU Dice Award (snakes, followed immediately by boxcars): Larry Zoet,
who, in a show of divine. poetic justice, wins the award that he
invented and creates every year (the melted dice-on-wood award is a
sight to behold).

Pete Belford Award (sportsmanship): Rob Linxweiller (J5)

The "Line of the Weekend" goes to Frank Amato, who, shortly after losing
in an unidentified scenario, with the room eerily quiet, shouted out:
"This scenario blows!"

Thanks, as always, to the following people:

-- Alex Key, for his generous support of ASL at Winter War and the ASL
Community in general
-- Kevin Graves, 2004 Scenario Listmaker ... great job, Kevin!!!
-- Larry Zoet, for his generous prizes for our "special" award-winners
(Newbie, "Achievement", and SNAFU Dice)
-- Chris Edwards, tournament "bracketologist", for advising on ways to
improve on the system next year

Thanks to our sponsors:

Multi-Man Publishing
Heat of Battle
Fanatic Enterprises
Larry Zoet
Alex Key

Looking forward to next year already! Thanks, as always, to the ASL
players themselves, who choose to make ASL at Winter War one of their
ASL tournament stops each year. Without you guys, there would be no ASL
at Winter War. Thanks again!

Brien
