[ASLML] WA and HIP

Here's an odd situation. A British squad assault moves across a wall into 
a concealment terrain Location. The defender (German) decides to reveal 
a previously-HIP squad in that Location, bumping the British squad back 
to the other side of the wall.

So who can claim WA?

Per B9.322, the British squad could claim WA as it is his MPh. Also per 
B9.322, the HIP German squad being revealed could claim WA. So who 
gets first shot at it? I gave it to the defending squad, as WA seems 
appropriate for an "ambushing" unit, but am not sure from a rules 
standpoint. Also, would it matter if the originating hex were open 
ground, ie, would "Mandatory WA" give first claim to the British unit as it 
returned to the open ground hex?
