Jim,
Thanks for sharing this interesting story. It was engaging enough for
me to do a little web searching on possible answers for unit insignia
questions.

See below with " * ".

Subject: [ASLML] German unit ID

In the photos of the German officer presenting the decoration, that
officer is seen in other photos riding in a M/C sidecar combo. On the
M/C is the following insignia:

- a diamond divided into 4 squares, 2 black, 2 white (I'm assuming here
as the pic's are B&W) in checker board style.

* Couldn't find anything for this. This might be a Regiment or lower
insignia.

- an upright bear-looking figure within a white hairline in the shape of
a shield.

* This looks like it might be the 68th Infantry Division. They fought
in Poland, France, and then Southern Russia. Seems to fit the right
time frame. Might also be the 24th Infantry, which fought in the same
fronts as the 68th. However, the 24th has just a standing bear, no
shield outline. Similarly, the 257th and 293rd Infantry division fought
on the east front, but their bear insignia also have a crown.

- an elognated triangle with small circles on each end of the base of
the triangle.

* Perhaps a symbol for a motorized anti-tank unit.

In another photo, there is a tank with a running figure holding a sword
up in the air, at least that is how it looked to me.

* Couldn't find anything on this -
