I think that the best first scenario for a beginner is 'Le Manor'. This scenario avoids the urban combat of Guard Counterattack by giving some space to learn how to move and fire out in the country side as you close with the enemy to end the game in CC.
As the German defender you have a small force with all the big toys, some freedom in how to set up from game to game even tough it is in a limited area. In fact the limited area helps a newbie by making them concentrate on the important area of the map. The MG's help to give a new player some real idea of what these monsters are capable of and what they can not do also. The hero introduce a important rule section that other wise may not come up during a game. The fact that the attacker has to come to you also helps a newbie learn how to use the fire table.
The newbie as the American player will learn how to move with out losing lots of infantry (unless he does a 'charge of the light brigade thing into the German MG's) so that by the end game there is also a lesson in CC. As the American you also learn how to use Mtr's and MG's and can start understanding how to cover an advance.
I think that the size of this scenario also takes it out of the 'one bad roll blows it' group. There is room for mistakes and still have fun.
