I've got it!

You can get these Laser Levels at many hardware stores, home centers, etc.

You set it off to the side, and it projects a straight line onto whatever surface you want. Just line up the line with the dots, and you can see exactly if the obstacle(s) are clear or not.

They >only< cost $125 or so....
