[ASLML] A9.21: CA and Rooftops

I am with the consensus that CA is restricted. And while I could imagine that line of
fire across a flat rooftop with no edge around it might be unimpeded and maybe they
could position the MG in the middle of the roof, I think it more likely that in reality
an individual SW is positioned on one side of the roof so that it has LOS into the adjacent
Location below (for example). To not restrict the CA suggests that the guys manning that
MG can be in positiion on one edge of the building to fire down into the adjacent hex...then
move it across the roof to do the same on the other side...then back across for another shot.

Similarily, in "reality" for woods or rubble, I think the MG is conceptually located on one
side of the hex...such side determined by the first shot. Once that first shot occurs, firing
in another direction (in "reality) would entail firing through the woods or rubble. And I would
suggest that in reality if 40m of woods is dense enough to block LOS through it, the 35m
of woods is probably dense enough too...not to mention making the fire a heck of a lot
less effective. An MG is one weapon...it can't be everywhere at the same time. IMO. the
CA restrictions reflect the fact that, at least for the 1 minutes of a player turn, the weapon
is likely to be positioned in only one spot. In OG, orchard, grain it is not unreasonable to
rationalize that you could just point the weapon in another direction and engage a different
target. In building/woods/rubble I think it is highly unlikely that you could do this, hence
the restriction. IMO...which means nothing...and is worth the cost of the electronic bits
and bytes that make it appear...maybe less:-)

Be well.

According to B23.8, "Rooftops are treated the same as another building floor
level at the next higher half-level elevation except as amended below."

Even though you probably have a good point from a "reality" standpoint, I
see nothing in B23.8-.88 that changes A9.21. Based on that, I would say
that the restricted CA penalties would have to apply to Rooftop Locations.

I am unaware of any other exceptions, but perhaps this is a good question
for Perry... or His Royal Taterness... ;-)

Bruce Bakken
